If You're Not Growing Your Own Veges, Your Family Is Missing Out

Monday, 17 June 2019 10:35:07 AM Australia/Sydney

Our favourite slogan is ‘Healthy Goodness At Your Doorstep”. There’s a reason for that – we know that our customers (not to mention our own family!) benefit in myriad ways when they grow their own herbs, fruit and veges in their very own greenhouses. And because there are so many sizes and shapes available, space should never really be an issue.

In this current environment, where screens consume most of our time, and our kids’ attention, it’s even more important to get them involved in other, more traditional pastimes. Without introduction to outdoor activities, like gardening and growing produce, they could be missing out on some of life’s simple pleasures.

It’s one of the reasons that we do what we do, and why we love it so much.

So, without further ado, let’s go through some of the ways that your family can benefit from having a greenhouse at home.

Having a greenhouse means …spending time together as a family

It’s challenging these days to do things together, as a family unit. There are sports games, work, social functions, the list goes on. Spending half an hour in the outdoors, with some sunshine on your face as you all tend to your greenhouse plants – well, it’s like a little bit of magic. Not to mention improving everyone’s health from being outdoors and feeling rewarding when you take your harvest inside to prep for the family meal.

Having a greenhouse means … training the kids to love their veggies

When the kids know where their food has come from, and they have had a hand in growing it, you can put money on the fact that they will enjoy it more. Understanding the process – from the initial planting, nurturing and watering, and then harvesting – allows to them have ownership. Rather than hearing things like ‘I don’t like broccoli’, you will start to hear ‘ Can I have more greens?’ Trust us. We did.

Having a greenhouse means … eating seasonally for greater nutrition

By eating what is in season, you are accessing potentially up to three times the nutritional level in your produce. Out-of-season produce requires chemical additives to keep it looking acceptable once its’ use-by date has passed. You can plan each seasons range of produce accordingly, and eat the tastiest, healthiest fruit and veges all year round!

Having a greenhouse means … you control the quality

When you grow it, you know its true quality. Your own produce has no chemicals, tastes fresh and healthy, and you aren’t paying through the nose for it at the local organic store.

Having a greenhouse means …everything tastes better

Even when you do pay dearly for organic produce, it is still most likely picked early. And that means that it hasn’t had the adequate exposure to sunlight or growing time that it needs to give you the optimal taste and level of nutrients. There is nothing better than picking a piece of fruit or a vege from your own garden, and taking a bite – the flavour is always sensational.

So if you are still thinking about whether a greenhouse is worth it for your family, there’s your answer.

5 Tips For Choosing The Perfect Site For Your Greenhouse

Tuesday, 21 May 2019 3:36:22 PM Australia/Sydney

Let’s say you have a green thumb, or you WANT to have a green thumb. And you want to become a gardener with a greenhouse, doing it properly – in a way that is affordable but allows you to garden all year round.

Whether you are a residential gardener, or a greenhouse hobbyist looking to make a start in the world of greenhouse growing, the Australian market has the perfect product for you.

The big question is, ‘where should I put it?’!

Let’s look at some of the points you should think about when you are working out exactly where to position your brand new greenhouse or glasshouse.

Think about the sun.

When positioning your greenhouse, maximising the sunlight is very important. We recommend your greenhouse receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Be mindful of shadows cast by buildings and trees, especially during short winter days. Greenhouse glazing under or too close to trees can also become quite dirty, further lessening light transmission. Leaves will also clog gutters quickly if the greenhouse is positioned under trees.

Typically we suggest a north-south orientation for your greenhouse but if that’s not possible, don’t panic. Internationally there is a lot of emphasis placed on orientation to maximise light interception in the greenhouse but because our light levels are so much higher, this is not so much of an issue here in Australia.

It’s all about drainage.

If heavy rains can flood up an area on your property, avoid that space. The last thing you want is having any excess water on your greenhouse or glasshouse floor, allowing mozzies to breed or just being slippery and dangerous! If you can find a reasonably level site or a place with a gentle slope, then you can just let gravity do its thing and get on with growing your veges!

A bit of shade can be a good thing…

It gets hot here in Australia. The sun can be brutal, so if there is an opportunity to position your greenhouse with some natural shade from trees, take it (we don’t mean right under the tress either!). Deciduous trees ideally – in winter, they will drop their leaves allowing the sun to shine through, and in summer their foliage will provide some coolness. Just ensure these trees don’t block your vital sunlight through the short winter days.

If you are in a climate with summer temps above 30 degrees, you will need to use our heat reflective shade system to allow your plants to flourish. Our shade systems are specially engineered with full aluminium framework. We use an aluminet cloth, full aluminium weave. This ingenious product reflects up to 50% of the suns intensity before it enters your greenhouse. We have a range of shade systems available for specific models within our range, if you would like to know more, just click here.

Protection from the elements … like wind

Strong winds can damage lesser quality greenhouses – so if your greenhouse is more basic and lightweight, make sure to choose a spot that is sheltered from prevailing winds, and wind tunnels.

If that’s not possible, you could build a temporary fence with shade cloth or open weave which would provide some windbreak for you.

We have models within our range which are perfect for high wind areas: the Supreme Greenhouse and Deluxe Greenhouse ranges – either of which could be the solution if you are in an intensive wind area. These ranges are engineered to last a lifetime, and incorporate a special design to withstand adverse weather conditions, even including full box section frames (Windsor Series), along with extra cantilever braces in the roof and eaves for added strength.

Make it easy to get to.

Having a greenhouse is something to be enjoyed, and never a chore.

Make sure your greenhouse or glasshouse is positioned close to your home so you can easily access it whenever you want and take care of your plants regularly.

Having a greenhouse or glasshouse at home can bring an enormous amount of joy and reward, so knowing how to place it correctly is vital.

Thursday, 21 January 2016 12:39:59 AM Australia/Sydney

Grow-Fresh Greenhouses wishes to introduce gardening enthusiasts to the term “orangery greenhouse” and explain how it came into use associated with our  greenhouse industry. According to Merriam Webster dictionary, orangery is defined as a protected place which offers plants and trees warmth in cooler termperatures.

The term dates back in history to Kensington Palace in 1794.  In that year, Queen Anne had an elaborate greenhouse built in the same style as the palace.  At that time, according to history, this newly built structure was intended protect the Queen’s orange trees.   Hence the name “orangery”.

At Grow-Fresh Greenhouses the term “orangery greenhouse” is actually a style of hot house greenhouse and use is limited only by imagination and space. This particular greenhouse is comprised of twin wall polycarbonate panels and has a modest, yet decidedly different T-model front opening.

Grow-Fresh Greenhouses and glass greenhouse kits are designed in such a manner as to be easily modified to allow for larger configurations and customized to fit any backyard and occasionally a front yard hard scape landscaping.  We should also point out the obvious, a Grow-Fresh Glasshouse is the epitome of grace and beauty and a prominent yet understated addition to any property.

Australians Go Greener with Family Greenhouses

Friday, 1 August 2014 11:26:58 AM Australia/Sydney

A greenhouse represents far more than a bold household fashion statement or the ultimate home accessory.  A greenhouse represents a significant investment in your family’s health, your home’s value and the planet’s future.

Visionary economists and environmentalists alike predict that, as “the village” becomes the key unit of commerce and governance around the world, more and more families will return to “family farming.”  Earth conscious families will abandon “ornamental horticulture, plowing-under lawns and flower beds for the sake of producing their own all-natural fruits and vegetables. “This is the best of family farming,” says an agriculture professor at the University of California. “No, this is not family farming in the old-fashioned sense of plowing-up the old homestead and growing corn, maize, cotton or hemp,” he explains. “This is single-family farming in the 21stcentury sense of building and maintaining sustainable agriculture for the family’s and community’s use.”

The visionaries and expert botanists especially recommend every family ought to have a greenhouse. “Of course, we capitalize on our greenhouse for year-round fresh produce,” says a happy Aussie home-farmer. “But we especially use it to get ahead of the growing season in Victoria; we nurture saplings for our orchard, and we nurse tender vegetable sprouts for immediate transplanting when the weather heats up and we can expect decent rains.”

Get the kids involved with gardening, they will learn so much about the process if they are hands-on.

Four advantages of greenhouse gardening

Avid greenhouse advocates stress both economic and health benefits from complementing backyard garden plots with state-of-the-art greenhouses. While they stress working in their greenhouses lets them escape from the stress of everyday life because their micro-environments give them sanctuary from their problems, nevertheless they point to at least four extremely practical advantages of keeping their greenhouse crops constantly growing and flourishing:

  • They defy the elements for year-round growing. Controlling light and shade, water and heat, greenhouse gardeners maintain optimum growing conditions for summer vegetables and berries. Some have grown so proficient at managing their indoor crops that they can harvest something new plus all the family favorites every week.  Just as importantly, they can get a head start on seasonal plants grown from bulbs, and they can incubate slow-developing trees and vines until they are fit for outdoor survival.

  • They protect growing plants against pests. During the summer months, insects and small animals feast on fledgling plants and brand new fruit.  Well-established plants resist pests and produce enough that they can forfeit a few delicacies to the critters. Therefore, strategic greenhouse gardeners nurture their young plants until they are ready to withstand the harrows and horrors of backyard development.  Tomatoes and strawberries especially benefit from extra time in a greenhouse.

  • They boost their household economies. Harvesting abundant crops, greenhouse gardeners become exceptionally proficient at freezing and canning much of their produce, and they share generously with friends and family.  Still, they have more produce than they can use, so they sell the excess at local farmers’ markets.  One Geelong housewife exults, “I actually gave up my work-a-day job to devote fulltime to my farming, because I not only saved a tiny fortune but also made another tidy bundle from selling the best of my homegrown produce.”

  • They feed their families nutrient-rich fresh fruits and vegetables. Of course, family farmers run absolutely no risk of purchasing contaminated produce.  Just as importantly though, they preserve all the nutrients in their fruits and vegetables by taking them straight from the plant to the table. Commercially grown produce, even if organically grown and carefully processed, loses between five and 10 percent of its vitamins and minerals for every day it spends in transport, and the average commercial product spends at least seven days in packing, transporting and retailing. A Victoria consumer expert says, “When you buy commercial produce, you pay quite a bit more for quite a bit less by comparison with homegrown or locally grown products.”

Welcome To Our New Site

Saturday, 19 July 2014 7:29:23 PM Australia/Sydney

Firstly I would like to welcome you all to our new blog :) We are super excited today as our new website has finally launched! This has been a long time in the making (mainly due to our insanely busy schedule!) but we couldn't be happier. When we decided last year it was time for a new site, we turned to Scott & Phoebe Wright @ Whitespace Design (www.whitespacedesign.com.au). We wanted a site that would continue to keep us ahead of the competitors and let us shine in our field. After all when you are online, this is your shop front. The guys at Whitespace Design have done some super work for us previously, with marketing materials such as our beautiful catalogue. Their attention to detail is outstanding and everything was completed in a very efficient manner. Most importantly, they were not happy until we were! Highly recommend these guys if anyone is looking for someone for any graphic design/website projects.

The new website promises to be an easy and pleasant experience, from super enlarged photos to easy-to-read descriptions for all products. We have simplified the cart process too, making sure it is a sinch to navigate, no matter how old or non-tech-saavy you are!

Grow-Fresh Greenhouses have a massive few months ahead with 6 new designs arriving, yes 6! It has been a very full on year of designing and planning but when we do something here at GFG, we do it properly. We cannot wait to share it all with you. Oh, but that means a whole lot more products to add to the new site doesn't it? Doh, I thought I was finished!

Anyway I am switching off for the night, off to have a glass of wine and watch my football team have a win...hopefully!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone.

Rae :)
